Goin' Lib Dems myself :)
Lib Dems here too.
In my constituency back home I know a lot of the candidates personally - one Lib-Dem councillor is the father of a good friend, and this year's Lib-Dem parliamentary candidate went to school with me!
Youngest would-be MP in TV spotlight
By Staff reporter
HARPENDEN’S Liberal Democrat candidate Hannah Hedges appeared on television this week as the youngest person to stand for election in the country, Miss Hedges, 21, was shown on Channel 5 outside 10 Downing Street, alongside the two youngest Labour and Conservative parliamentary candidates – both 22.
Anyone younger than 21 cannot stand as a candidate.
The interview – filmed last week – was screened as part of a news feature to get youngsters interested in politics. Each candidate was asked why they got involved in politics, why should young people be interested in politics and what their respective party would do for young people if elected.
Miss Hedges said: “The Liberal Democrats want to give young people their voice back, a voice which hasn’t really been heard since the 60s. I want to show young people that politics can work for them.
“It was my first time in Downing Street, I hope the first of many.”

BroadbandPlacey
6th May 2005, 00:02
how has labout been a disaster!!!
low unemployment - low inflation = stable economy
we as a country are generally prosperous - depending on who you listen too crime is either stable or down we have more police officers - more teachers - more doctors and nurses - hospital waiting times are down
they've had to sort out the mess the previous conservative govt left by underfunding the public sector for year after year

Good morning to Tony Blair.
Lib Dems were doing so well in single consituencies having gains of 10% but the system we use means that becasue they did not have a majority they only made an extra 12 seats. But on the way to becoming the opposition.

u fool placey, the reason they voted on that note is that they felt that if labour let immigration carry on the way it was, soon enough their town would be full of immigrants aswell....
Or maybe they're just morons that don't know the difference between immigrants, assylum seekers and economic migrants.

I agree to an extent Shelley. I don`t think he`s done that bad a job and normally I would have voted for him, but I didn`t agree with going to war with iraq and thats why I couldn`t vote labour this time round. ;)

yeah, just as you shouldnt believe everything you read, you equally shouldnt believe everything that comes out of politicians arses (mouths depending on your POV!)
"its not racist to talk about immigration" (in freaky transelvanian voice)
but IT IS racist, Mr Howard, to bread fear and resentment in the country by portraying immigration and immigrants as something to be scared off.
shelley
7th May 2005, 20:00
People resent immigrants because they come over here, get given benefits, houses free medical care and now they are having trouble controlling the truckloads of people that arrive each day, how many are entitled to free dental treatment when there are millions of people in this country who can't even get registered with a dentist, If they want to come over and gets jobs to help contribute to the country fine! but being given houses and being entitled to the same benefits as Brit born tax paying citizens is why i think people resent them
There is a difference between racism and resentment
Immigration laws and policies need to be reviewed, and controlling methods in place
:)

Don`t be fooled by the blue rinse brigade Jimmi. Too many have this stupid idea that we as brits are a peg above anyone from anywhere else. They did their share of letting in people not native to this country as well, but they don`t brag about that too much. They played the race card during this election campaign and that makes me sick to the pit of my stomach. What makes me even more sick is the fact that so many people agree with the venom they spew. I`m getting ashamed at the level of intolerance in my own country. I only thank god that my two boys have been brought up to not pre judge anyone no matter what their colour or religion.
I`m sorry if what I said earlier seems a little harsh, tis just my opion. I make wax effigies of Maggie Thatcher still to this day which I duly stick pins into. I just can`t stand what they stand for and i`ll never forgive them for letting people believe that it was ok to just look after number one. They set in motion a whole different mind set that taught people to not care about anyone only themselves and we are still reaping the effects of that and will do for a hell of a long time.

They do indeed. Because if they aren`t reviewed then this country of ours will errupt into a place of violence because of it. I have no problem with someone genuinely fleeing persecution asking for asylum. I do have a problem with all these migrant scroungers coming here as it just breeds contempt. And then as a result people who do work and contribute to our society and have been here for donkeys years end up being tarred with the same brush.

Why does it annoy you? voting isn't compulsory, whether i choose to vote or not is my business, i'm certainly not the only one who didn't, maybe i don't really care! maybe i care more about more important things to hand, so what why let it bother you

abstaining from voting is fine by me... it means i have a bigger say in what happens in this country. if everyone voted my vote would be worth 39% less than it is now
Genuine asylum seekers are from countries that the UN says is in breach of Human Rights as regards persecution for "political beliefs". Despite what some of the tabloids would like us to think, the number of people seeking asylum is falling, not rising and it has been for the last few years.
Asylum seekers are not the same as immigrants. The reason people called the Tory's policy "racist" is because Michael Howard said that there could be a repeat of the 2001 race riots if people feel that immigration is out of control.
I don't know if anyone has been paying attention to the figures but we are heading towards an economic disaster in 10 to 20 years. Our low birth rate and longer life expectancy means that soon there won't be enough people of working age paying taxes to cover the costs of healthcare, education, pensions, benefits etc. We simply won't have enough people of working age here. Unless we can increase immigration pretty damn quick we are fucked.

Maybe you should vote to continue your support for him then?
But then again...
maybe i don't really care!
So your first point doesnt count then...
Sorry dont really want to pick on you in particular, but did you see those BBC ads? The ones trying to encourage people to vote? If you dont bother voting you can't complain about anything because you were not even willing to try and change it.
Mind you if everything is absolutely perfect in your life and there is nothing that could be improved in your area, then Im coming to live with you!

Twigman, i really can't see your point of having digs at me! havent you got anything else better to do with your time than to worry about what i said/didn't say! whether i voted or not ? like i said before whatever i do is my business regardless of whether you like it or not!
Lol at the quotes, i was replying to someone else in one quote ( my opinion i am still allowed those even though i didn't vote right! ) and responding to you in another, not that i need to explain myself to you
Are you really that bored that you get up the arse over pointless things with people ?
As far as i'm concerned that's the end of it, please go find someone else to pick on
Twigman
8th May 2005, 16:24
No that was my point...its not just you I am picking on...hence
Sorry dont really want to pick on you in particular
It applies to all the people that just "Couldnt be bothered" to vote. NOt just you, hence I didnt want it to appear like that. Obviously it did, and im sorry.
my opinion i am still allowed those even though i didn't vote right!
Yes of course :)
Are you really that bored that you get up the arse over pointless things with people ?
But thats my whole point! Its not pointless at all! This will affect every single one of us! Whether we like it or not! I think its very important really!
I am quite suprised that no one else appears to agree with me on this.
Ah well. I wont add anything else to this conversation.
I hope there are no hard feelings :)
There have been times I found it almost impossible to vote when some of my personal values and beliefs were shared in part by all the 3 major politcal parties. That's when I had to list the issues that were important to me and give each one a value of 1 to 10. The party that got the most points from my list got my vote.

There was others who posted in this thread that didn't vote! don't see you getting up the arse with them :(

i do agree with you, voting is VERY important
BUT there are many reasons why ppl dont vote
- if you couldnt decide between the party's - by not voting your giving them equal value (if that makes sense)
- slam couldnt vote cos he was in hospital as im sure happened to many thousands of others.
- if you hated the party's equally and didnt want to support any of them.
- too busy (i do find that one a bit of a cop out but if you were generally too busy to vote then fairy snuff)
- i believe homeless ppl cant vote as the have no fixed address
... there are many reasons but the general "i cant be arsed" to walk the 1/2 mile to the polling station to put a cross in a box does get up my nose!!!
