what memory do most cameras use ?

MW

BroadbandPlacey
28th December 2005, 21:16
totally depends on the make, and what the manufacturers are wanting to use at the time,

the cheapies tend to stick to SD, my cannon is CF, all sony is their own memory stick

mr-white
28th December 2005, 21:21
should the memory type not influence my decision ?

well just look at how much each cost per say, 512 card, and take it into consideration

some are physically larger, some read and write quicker than others, i have no personally favourite all though CF is quite large and slow compared to my old SD camera

well mine must be a 'cheapie' then coz its got SD:( thought a memory stick was a memory stick:rolleyes1 shows how much i know

This (http://www.steves-digicams.com/flash_memory.html) is an interesting read.

SD seems quite common

I wouldn't say that SD is only for cheapy cameras (mainly because my Canon one uses SD!)

All memory cards are pretty much alike, apart from CF (Compact Flash) and Sony's Memory Sticks.

CF is often used in more professional cameras because you can get IBM Microdrives in that size which are tiny hard mechanical hard disks. Microdrives were a lot cheaper than the equivalent flash card, but that difference is disappearing. CF cards tend to be reasonably priced like all other cards.

Avoid Sony's Memory Stick format because is proprietary and costs a lot more than any other type.

is there a noticable difference in the memory performance ?

I have to pimp fuji. I got my finepix a310 about 2 years ago and it still works great even after being totally submersed in it's 1st week of use. It sits in my truck in the sun all day. It still works and the picture quality is impressive.

I doubt I need to say this but make sure you research and compare you're choices, I've always found reviews for any digicam there at Steve's.

the reason why i said SD tends to be in the cheepies is because fuji and olympus use their own format - XD picture cards is it, and sony use their memory sticks, cannon tend to use CF, so the big names usually use their own format leaving the generic cameras to the popular generic format - SD

I've had nothing but good work from my old Sony PS32 (or some model like that). I only use it when I'm out on the piss and want some memories the next day/year... I use a slightly heftier Canon for anything more 'important'.

why am i so picky....SONY Cyber-shot DSC-W7 (http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/86464/art/sony/cyber-shot-dsc-w7.html#) :(

http://aka.fotovista.com/dev/7/9/11120497/g_11120497_007.jpg http://aka.fotovista.com/dev/7/9/11120497/g_11120497_005.jpg http://aka.fotovista.com/dev/7/9/11120497/g_11120497_009.jpg

the sony takes AA batteries where as the pentax takes Li-Ion D-LI8 battery (pic below), the li-ion batteries seem to charge 3 times quicker, do they hold the same charge ?

http://aka.fotovista.com/dev/5/5/33100155/s_33100155.jpg

also the sony is 37mm thick were as the pentax is only 19mm but the sony has higher MP, more internal memory, uses sony stick memory instead of SD and has better digital zoom. both the same price :)

ignore digital zoom, all its doing is cropping the image giving the appearance of zooming but you just loose quality and or end picture size

you can do digital zoom x100 at home with any photoshop type software - its optical thats important

:puke: that's how I feel about digital zoom. IMO they shouldn't bother telling us how much didgital zoom they have, because it is really only an indication of how many MP's they have. I don't know exactly how they come up with that number but it only makes sense that the better resolution the better the digital zoom.

nikon use compact flash. cf is a better format because you can get those great little microdrives of multi gigabyte capcity to fit straight in...

mr-white
29th December 2005, 12:02
prob get a 512mb/1gb flash memory on top of the internal, should be enough :)

microdrives arent used for professional applications due to the lag involved.

Fine if your taking portraits, but if your a sports photographer relying on fast shutter speeds and so on, the time it takes for a camera to save an image to a microdrive is a pain in the arse! (you cant take another image in the time its saving)

I'd go fuji, if you aim for a prosumer fuji as opposed to a compact the excellent advice over at http://www.s5000.net/phpBB2/ is good to look over. However prosumer camera's are more "beefier" than the compacts mentioned above, and are unlikely to fit into your pockets unless you have baggies or cargo pants on.
